Unfortunately, this listing should now read ‘demolished.’

The status of the Odeon Drive-In can now be changed to ‘Closed’. It was announced last night in a local tv news report that because of poor attendance the last two seasons Odeon management has decided not to reopen and are closing it permanently. The Odeon was the last drive-in theater left in the area. It was also reported that the property is available for sale.

This past summer, I took my 5 year old nephew to the Odeon. I’d been there several times in the weeks before, but had never gone inside. The washrooms and concession area are a complete disgrace! When was the last time they cleaned the place? Honestly, if they were to just clean up and revamp the building a bit (paving the lot might be going a bit too far), I think it would be far more appealing and bring in more business.
However, that said, the overall experience was great… sitting in the comfort of your vehicle while watching a double feature like this is very cool! I will be there again when it opens (hopefully), and be bringing some friends.
I hope that the owners will be wise enough to sink a little money into it in order to draw more crowds in the future. The drive-in experience is totally unique.

Anyone remember when it was open year round?

It was announced today that the Odeon Drive-In will reopen for another season. Company sources said that although attendance had been slow during the week last year, weekend business was sufficient to warrant operating the theatre. That coupled with an over the winter letter writing campaign might have convinced them to try it again. Opening date is scheduled for May 19.

I think Mr. Anderson could’ve kept that site up this year, and even if he had a hissy fit with the company saving advertising dollars, he still could’ve helped promote it himself. Isn’t this all really a grassroots effort?

And in the newspaper, didn’t he say when his daughter was old enough, he wanted to take her there and share his “success story” with her? He was really the public’s face for revitalization, and then he just quit.

The petition reached 11,000 signatures and now Cineplex Galaxy has agreed to keep the Odeon open for atleast one more season. We now need to work together to make this season a successful one. Get out there as many times as you can and support this drive-in. Don’t sneak food in, spend a reasonable amount at the snack bar even if it’s just a drink and dont hode people in the trunk. It’s a beautiful drive-in with an amazing screen and it’s Winnipeg’s last. The un-official Odeon Drive-in site is now online at http://www.unodd.ca The site offers updates and events for the drive-in, a forum where visitors can discuss their ideas for the drive-in, feedback on the site and more. It also has drive-in facts, movie listings, and eventually a movie pole. I hope this will really help the Odeon Drive-in stay open for a long time

Definetly agree that the DRIVE IN should be playing some of the old classic movies. Also the inside of the concession store REALLY could be updated!! I hate going in to that place. ( Yea I know, y bother sinking $$ into it, if its going under)
There is SOOOO much that can be done there and I really hope that they look into different ways of attracting more people.
Keep in mind that you may pay $8 to see ONE movie at silvercity, while at the drive in its $8 for TWO!! Or there’s carload night when u pack everyone in!!

If it leaves I will miss it. It will also be my fault because I talk alot about how I enjoyed the drive-in but have done little in the past few years to suport it. Its a shame to see it go but unless they can come up with a novel attraction there may be no hope. I have a couple of ideas. A screened in area with tables and benches that people can view the movies from instead of there cars. I no this defeats the purpose but I have seen many drive-ins with bleachers near the food stand. Another Idea I had envolves camp fires. Creat seating around lots of campfires so that people can have that outdoors feeling of camping. We had the same kind of thing back when I was a teanager at summer caps just a smaller version. Great memorys and lots of fun.

Oh and please excuse the BAD speeling. Its a trade mark :)

I am a teenager that has driven past your Winnipeg drive-in many times and to my dismay there have been no good movies playing. They are all very unappealing. The odd time that the film industry does come out with a good movie I hate to say but I would much prefer to go to Silvercity about ten minutes away. The problem is is that you are competing in a race that you can’t win. People would much prefer to go to a real cinema to see the recent movies, so what the drive-in has to do is be different. My suggestion is that they play the old movies. The movies could be anything from the start of film to the present day, focusing more on the old movies though. I would love to drive past the movie theatre and see that an old Agatha Christie was playing or maybe a movie form the eighties. If it is not possible to switch to the old films all the time, it would be really neat if you had the old movies playing maybe once a week. By playing the old movies you would be a lot different than the other movie centers and therefore losing quite a lot of competition. There have been a lot of good movies throughout the years and they need to be played so that young people like myself can experience them. There have been some good movies recently but unfortunately there are also a lot of bad ones and in order to be continually playing movies you are forced to play them. That’s not to say years ago there weren’t bad ones also, but you would only be playing the good ones, which there were quite a lot of. The drive-in is something that needs to be remembered for everyone and the movies should be maybe more family geared not movies that only adults should be seeing. The drive-in could become a really neat place for people to remember the old times; it’s too bad they already built the ‘50’s museum here in Winnipeg because the drive-in would have been a really neat place to have it. Nostalgia is in and that could really be brought out by playing the old movies!

Thank you for your time and I hope you really consider my letter because like many others would really love to see the drive-in stay open!
