Opened by General Cinema on September 25, 1988 as The Plaza 8, the theater is located at the Plaza at Chapel Hill. AMC took over the theater when they bought General Cinema in 2002. On February 1, 2008, Cleveland Cinemas took over management of the theater, renaming it Plaza Cinemas at Chapel Hill.
The Plaza Cinemas at Chepel Hill was closed on January 4, 2013. The building was demolished and a Dicks Sporting Goods store was built on the site.

The Plaza Cinemas closed January 4, 2013 due to the landlord having new use for the land. The building will be torn down and replaced by a new Dick Sporting Goods in the Fall of 2013.
