The Little Theatre opened on September 19, 1929 as an art house theatre with the German/Polish silent movie “Die Nibelungen:Siegfried” starring Paul Richter. Although it opened as talkies were becoming the norm, it only showed silent films.
The Little Theatre closed in 1930, reopening as Basil’s Hollywood Theatre on May 9, 1930 by the Basil Brothers Theatres chain. Basil heavily promoted the theatre, showing foreign films, art films, and reruns. Basil gave up in 1934, and the Hollywood Theatre closed.
The theatre was part of an existing structure and shared the building with other businesses. It was the only movie theatre located on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, one of the city’s main thoroughfares. After closing it was refurbished and became the Chez Ami, one of the city’s premier nightclubs. The building was razed in 1974.
