Rialto Cinema

The Rialto Cinema was designed by architect F.J. Macaulay and after taking just six months to build it opened on 5th November 1936 with Harry Roy in “Everything is Rhythm”. It closed in August 1970 and the following year was converted into a car showroom for Windsor Motors. This had closed in 2008. The empty building suffered from a fire in January 2015. By July 2015 it was offered ‘For Sale’ and in July 2022 the building had a ‘Sold’ sign on it.

In January 2023 plans were proposed to demolish the cinema, but retain and restore the façade, to become the entrance to a block of student flats planned for the site.
