In the early-1970’s, there were two adult movie theaters on Gay Street. Besides the Bijou Theatre, which was then showing X-rated movies, there was also the Gay Street Cinema which had opened on September 25, 1969. It was several blocks north of the Bijou Theatre, on the same side of the street. The building it was in did not look as though it had been built as a theater. It closed in 1975 following a suspicious fire. Despite the name, they showed straight, not gay, movies.

The Gay Street Cinema was a converted store front theater that seated 150. It opened in 1969 and closed in 1975 after a suspicious fire that was said to be started by a fire bomb. This is the first theatre in Knoxville to show “Deep Throat” in late 1972.
