Located in the Robin Park Leisure Centre in the west of Wigan, Greater Manchester. The 11-screen Virgin opened on 12th December 1996. It was taken over by UGC, then Cineworld. In March 2006 Empire Cinemas took control and it was re-branded Empire.
Seating capacities in the screens range from 550, down to 129.
It was closed on 6th July 2023 due to Empire Cinemas UK entering into administration.
On 4th March 2024 it was purchased by the Irish chain Omniplex Cinemas and following renovation it is planned to reopen in summer 2024. The reopened cinema will have 11 OmniplexMAXX extra-large screens, fully electric recline seating, and Dolby Atmos 3D sound. Some selected screens will also have luxurious sofa beds.

This site did not open in 2006. It was built in 1996 as a Virgin Cinema, becoming UGC, Cineworld and then Empire in 2006.
Now closed due to Empire entering administration as of yesterday.
It’s been announced today that Omniplex Cinemas have acquired the former Wigan Empire and are spending £3.5 million to bring it up to snuff. It’s expected to reopen in the summer.
