Crystal Theatre

Opened as the Gayety Theatre prior to 1916. It was renamed the Crystal Theatre in 1926. The theatre was located at E. Second Street and Cedar Street. There was a whole cluster of theatres in this area at one time. The theatre had closed by 1950, and it now the Riverside Restaurant. This town had a lot of theatres for a population of a little over 20,000.

The Crystal Theatre can be seen in this 1925 photo of a parade of elementary school graduates marching along East Second Street in downtown Muscatine.

The Gayety Theatre was listed at 303 E. Second Street in 1919. I’ve found it mentioned in the local newspaper as early as October, 1916, and as late as 1920.

The Crystal Theatre is listed with 300 seats in FDY’s from 1926 through 1932, vanishes in 1933 and 1934, and reappears in 1935 with 400 seats. It is last listed in 1947.
