Palace Cinema

The Alhambra and Cinema Hall opened in 1914 as a variety theatre and cinema. It had an 11 feet deep stage and two dressing rooms. It became the Palace Cinema in 1921.

Always independently operated, many of its patrons came from the crews of cargo ships moored up in the nearby docks.

Like everything else in Tilbury, the hall was a very basic and ‘make-do’ design. A rectangular concrete box with a single storey entrance extension at one end. Not a pretty site, but perfectly adequate as a third-run cinema.

The Palace Cinema closed in 1959 and became a snooker club and bingo club.
