Astra Cinema

In Laeken district near the Rue Marie Christine, was a movie theatre named Astra Cinema, located at Place J-B Willems. It opened in 1931.

In 1958 Laeken district was important for Belgium because of the International Fair "Expo ‘58" which was located in the Heizel were Kinepolis is now exploited. It was the time of young King Baudoin, Elvis Presley did his army duties in Germany and “Loving You” was shown at the Astra Cinema the first week of July, the same week as “Jailhouse Rock” was first run in Brussels at the Scala Cinema.

Other important films of the 1950’s played at the Astra Cinema were “To Catch a Thief” in 1956, and “The Bridge On the River Kwai” for two weeks in 1959. The Astra Cinema closed in 1967.
