Grand Cinema

Located on the corner of High Street and Forge Road. The Grand Cinema was built in 1908, and was constructed at the rear of an existing building, with the entrance through a former shop front. It was enlarged in the 1920’s.

The Grand Cinema continued until at least 1944, but by 1947, it was listed as the Grand Theatre and was operated by Woodward Cinemas. Its last operators were the Portavon Cinema Co. Ltd., who were listed in 1954. Apparently, it never fitted Cinemascope, and was closed in the mid-1950’s. The Grand Theatre was converted into a bingo club in 1963. This closed in 1972, and the building was demolished in a redevelopment of the area.

Last film was screened 20th April 1963 ‘Witness for the Prosecution’ with the cinema going over to bingo following that.

Films throughout 1960s were advertised in Cinemascope so previous comment on that may be incorrect.
