April 24, 1945 Brownsville Herald illustration of Mexico theatre

Dating from the early-1900’s this was originally opened as the Dreamland Theatre. In the late-1930’s it was renamed El Tiro Theatre and began screening Spanish language movies. In early-1940 it was renamed Teatro Mexico with seating listed at 710. It was a popular theatre, and after a complete renovation was reopened April 24, 1945. The theatre remained in operation through the late-1970’s. This was one of three theatres on E. Washington Street within two blocks of each other. After closing the theatre was converted to retail space as it remains today.
