Palace Theatre

Located on the High Street, next door to the Bulls Head pub in Walkden to the northeast of Manchester. The Palace Theatre was opened as a cinema in 1914 with 1,030 seats. In 1927 the Palace Theatre was operated by the J.F. Emery Circuit. It had a seating capacity of 950 and the proscenium was 30 feet wide. The stage was 6 feet deep and there were two dressing rooms.

The J.F. Emery Circuit operated the Palace Theatre until 1957. It closed as a cinema in 1967 and it converted into a bingo club. This has since closed, and by 2009, it had been demolished and a block of flats name Worsley Court had been built on the site.

I was the projectionist here from 1965 until conversion. It was an after school job when I was in the 6th form! The manager at the time was Gilbert Taylor, the cashier Mrs Booth (Edith, I think!), the usherettes Lilian and Doreen and the caretaker Arthur Plimmer.Various other projectionists came and went. I stuck it out (I needed the cash)
