Kosmos Ufa Palast

One of the few new cinemas built in the times of the German Democratic Republic, the Kosmos 1000 Kino is located in the former East Berlin district of Mitte. It opened in 1961 with an ambitious architecture style and 1,000 seats in orchestra and balcony levels.

It became part of the Ufa chain with nine more unremarkable screening rooms added around it in 1996, and the original 1,000-seat screen remaining intact. The cinema closed on 27th July 2005 and is now a nightclub.

The Kosmos was designated a Landmark Listed building in 1978.

The Kosmos opened as the Kosmos 1,000, as it had at the time 1,000 seats;very precise, very communist, very German! The architects were Josef Kaiser and Herbert Aust who also designed the Kino International located further along Karl-Marx Allee. Seating is located in orchestra and balcony levels. The main original cinema is basically untouched since opening and was given Listed building status in 1978. It now seats 984 and is equipped with Dolby Digital, SDDS, DTS and is THX certified.

The 9 other screens are built around it at the sides and to the rear.

Since autumn 2005 the Kosmos cinema is closed for business. There are by january 2006 no further information about the future for this remarkable multiplex. The added smaller auditoria are situated underground, surrounding the original Kosmos, hence the recent facade being the original. Felix Kruse

Kosmos today, may 2006, is slightly altered to a discotheque, with restaurant and bars. The main, original auditorium is fully accessable, and certainly worth a visit. The seating area of course now is replaced with bars and dancefloor. Nevertheless the Kosmos is still in good shape, as good as it gets, not being a cinema theatre. Felix Kruse
