The Nortown was operated by Famous Players Theatres, but on occasion 20th Century Theatres would do the booking. How this worked I don’t know, but I was in charge of the art dept. at 20th Century at that time and the Nortown would sometimes end up being advertised in our newspaper ads instead of the Famous Player’s display.
The Nortown was also equipped with 70mm projection, but the screen was just an average size which did nothing to enhance the 70mm viewing experience.
Loved the Nortown! Saw many a Disney film there when I was a child. It also had a lot of roadshow reserved seat move overs from the University. Too bad it was closed so early, could have gone on for years.
Jon, I remember that so well that sometimes the Nortown was in the 20th Century ads or most of the time the Famous Players ads. I also remember that 20th Century usually changed films on Wednesdays, Odeon on Thursdays and Famous Players and Loews on Fridays. Ahhh those were the days. Do you remember when the 2 companies (Famous Players and 20th Century) more or less merged? After that they were all in the Famous Players ads.
I remember going to this theatre a lot as kid growing in Toronto during the 1960s, very popular movie house for the area.
Built and operated by Famous Players Canadian Corporation and their excellent management. The display ad might appeared in the Twentieth Century section of the newspaper, but it was 100% Famous Players operation. The last manager of this theatre was Phil Traynor on leave from the Imperial while being turned into the Imperial Six!!!
