Methodist Central Hall

Located in the south London district of Tooting. The Wesleyan Methodist Central Hall was built by Joseph Arthur Rank (later head of the Rank Organisation) as a venue for concerts and talks. It was opened on 10th November 1910 and films were also shown on a regular basis from 19th November 1910. Seating was provided for 1,800 and there were 800 seats in the lower hall in the basement.

The building was badly damaged by German bombs in 1940, and it wasn’t repaired until 1945. When it re-opened, films were not part of programming. The Central Methodist Hall was demolished in 1967 and a Marks & Spencer store was built on the site. This had become a Primark store by 2011.
