The 20th Century Theatre was built and operated by 20th Century Fox Corporation, and was one of a few theatres around the world specifically designed for screening CinemaScope films. It opened in 1954 with a Gala opening of "The Robe" starring Richard Burton.

The exterior had a Moderne style, with a central panel containing ‘stars’ and a 40 feet high sign bearing the theatre’s name in neon. Inside the auditorium there was seating provided in stalls and circle levels. The lower parts of the walls were lined in Sapele Mahogany, while the stepped ceiling contained troughs of concealed lighting. Above the proscenium was an abstract mural depicting a marine scene.
