National Electric Theatre

The National Electric Theatre was opened on 15th April 1911, and was a purpose built cinema operated by the National Electric Theatres chain. In March 1928, it was taken over by Denman Picture Houses, a subsidiary of the Gaumont British Theatres chain.

From 1935, it played second run to the Gaumont owned newly built Majestic Cinema. The National Electric Theatre was an early closure, closing on 24th February 1951 with Victor McLaglen in "Magnificent Brute" and Abbott & Costello in "On the Carpet".

It was converted into Wilkinson’s Fashion store until September 1983, when it became a Best Sellers shop. It continues in retail use today, housing fashion store MK One.
