The Mesa Drive-In was opened in 1949 and was owned by W.T. Wickersham with Co-Op Theatres. It held 400 cars in 1956, later increased to 700. It was still open in the 1970’s.

Opened in 1949, the 600 car drive-in’s 65 foot high drive-in screen could be seen for miles. Such a success was the Desert Drive-In that the same operators announced a second drive-in constructed in 1952 and launched May 20, 1953 in the 800-car Silver Spur Drive-In. That year, the only city of Yuma fireworks displays approved were at the Mesa D-I and Silver Spur D-I.

The June 17, 1950 issue of BoxOffice reported:
YUMA, ARIZ. – Bill Wickersham has disposed of his 700-car Mesa Drive-In here to Bernie Leavitt, California exhibitor who operates conventional indoor theatres in Santa Monica and La Jolla.
Boxoffice, March 22, 1952: “An improvement project has been completed at the Mesa Drive-In in Yuma, increasing the car capacity by more than 100. The ozoner is managed by Bob Klauer.”

Boxoffice, Dec. 25, 1948: “One of the biggest neon signs in the southwest will be installed on the 60-foot screen tower of the new Mesa Drive-In in Yuma. The sign, featuring a cowboy on horseback, will be done in many colors, with the neon flashing back and forth to make the cowboy appear to twirl his lariat. Installation of the sign will begin as soon as the screen tower is surfaced.”
