Highland Drive-In

Opened as the Hyland Drive-In on July 21, 1948 with Esther Williams in “Fiesta”. The drive-in opened as a single screen. On April 18, 1962 after a four hundred thousand dollar remodel and a second screen added, it reopened as the Highland Drive-In. The drive-in closed in 1982 and was later demolished.

It parked 600 cars in 1956 and was owned by Hyland Theatre Company.M.S.Smart, Mgr.

3679 South Highland Drive is the correct address for this drive-in.

At the time Starcrash (1978) was released, this theater was still using corded speakers you would hang on your car window (not FM radio).

A lengthy article in the April 23, 1962 issue of BoxOffice talked about the reopening of the Highland on April 18, 1962. It sure sounded like that was the date of the grand unveiling of the new 150-foot-wide curved screens.
