Royal Naval Barracks Cinema

Located in the Royal Marine Barracks, in the Stonehouse district of Devonport, near Plymouth, Devon. The Royal Naval Barracks Cinema was opened prior to 1937 and had 288 seats. At that time it was only possible for Naval Ratings to attend, as it was inside the Royal Naval Barracks 54, with an entrance via the Devonport Royal Dockyard. It was equipped with BTH sound and had a 28 feet wide proscenium.

After World War II, and by 1947, it had been re-named Globe Cinema. Still operating in 1954, it remained a military cinema, not open to the general public.

By 1963, it had reverted back to the name Royal Naval Barracks Cinema, with a seating capacity for 682. It was still open in 1966 serving the military personnel. The Royal Marine Barracks remains open as a military installation today.

Hi Ken… How you brought back vivid memories of being stationed in ‘Guz’ in the latter 1950’s at HMS Drake. And yes, my navy blue bell bottoms graced those seats quite a few times; standing at attention for “God Save The Queen” and/or when VIP’s entered. And how about those fabulous nautical curtains!!!
