Signature Theatres and North America Cinemas, in a joint venture, opened the Art Deco-styled Turlock Stadium 14 on December 18, 1998. The two companies previously had planned separate projects in Turlock but realized two competing theaters would fail. As late as June 1996 the Modesto Bee had reports that Cinemark was designated to build at this site but with no explanation those plans never came to fruition.
The Bee said the 3,000-seat cinema, was formerly a K-Mart store. It had a 10,000- square foot lobby and a separate antechamber to prevent light from entering the auditoriums. Theater officials said that they had already factored in the impending opening of the Brendan Theatre in Modesto and were confident that they could draw from the smaller towns around Turlock. In October of 2004 Regal Cinemas acquired Signature Theatres and the Turlock Stadium 14.
