Imagine Cinemas Elgin Mills

Opened on December 22, 1995 by Cineplex Odeon, the Elgin Mills Cinemas were sold to Empire Theatres in September 2005, in order to satisfy competition regulations after the Cineplex/Famous Players merger.

The theatre has automated box offices, digital projection and is CaptiView enabled, but has no stadium seating.

Mike Rivest’s guide lists the seating capacity as 2,327, with the largest auditorium seating 294 and the smallest seating 185.

It was closed in 2013. It was reopened in November 2013 as Rainbow Cinemas Elgin Mills. In 2016 it was taken over by Imagine Cinemas.

This theatre is now closed. The lease expired and was not included in the recent Empire Theatres sale. Would be nice if Rainbow picked it up, they haven’t opened anything in the area in years. Would be a nice compliment to their nearby Rainbow Promenade Mall location.

Unbelievable that Empire actually closed this one. They showed they didn’t care when they sold off all their theatres to Cineplex. I have read just recently that some of the AMC theatres in Canada were just closed completely if they weren’t sold to Cineplex!

Well the only AMC that wasn’t sold to Cineplex or Empire was the Kennedy Commons and that was closed. The AMC Interchange is still AMC and is still open.

Good news! The Elgin Mills cinemas are re-opening in November as the Rainbow Elgin Mills. It’s already on their web site. Too bad this didn’t happen with the Sheppard Centre cinemas or the Kennedy Commons. Oh well, great news for Richmond Hill residents.
