As of today, the Metro Pointe 12 is still open over a year after the pending closure was announced. Curious if a new lease was negotiated or if it’s still on the chopping block. Anyone know more?

Call me crazy but I literally left a thank you note for this theater just now. So sad to hear that this theater is going away soon. This was my go to place for movies when I lived out in Costa Mesa. Saw such films as “The Incredibles”, “Robots”, “Madagascar”, and “The Wild” here. The last time I went to this theater was when I saw “Tenet” for the first time. One of the best theaters ever. Costa Mesa won’t be the same without it.

It is startling to see how the Costa Mesa Metro area has slipped from cinema relevance. There was a time when the area was known as the “Westwood of Orange County”, due to the proliferation of high profile theatres and desirable demographics. Back in the 70’s and 80’s any film of note had to play in Costa Mesa. However, the area never kept pace with the megaplex/stadium era. The formerly high profile theatres quickly became dated and closed; the Metro Point and Triangle Square new builds failed to stand out as anything special. Now, the area is somewhat of a secondary/forgotten market.

Just heard about the pending closure. Granted the movie-exhibition business has taken a big hit since the pandemic, but the news is still a bit of a shock as this now leaves only the three-screen Regency South Coast Village & eight-screen Starlight Triangle Square Cinemas left in a city (including the Santa Ana portion of the South Coast Metro area) that at one time had the most theaters/screens in Orange County.

I guess if anything it will help increase the traffic for the remaining two theaters and hopefully keep them afloat for a while.

According to the OC Register, Cineworld (Regal’s parent company) will begin to reject leases starting Feb. 15.

The venue has made the latest Regal closure list; no firm closing date is associated with that.

The theatre/center is actually spelled “Pointe” with an “E” on the end.
