Victor Theatre

The American Theatre was located on Granby Street, near Smith & Welton’s department store and adjacent to the Norva Theatre. It was opened in 1913, and was closed around 1925. It was reopened as the Victor Theatre, which operated into the 1940’s’s. It went into retail use, operating as Lerner Shops. It has since been demolished and has been replaced by a modern building for Tidewater Community College.

I believe that the Smith & Welton’s mentioned is a large department store rather than streets—though I could be wrong.

Smith & Welton was definitely a department store.

The American Theatre was listed in the 1913-1914 edition of Julius Chan’s guide, with the note “Theatre plays pictures only.”
