Scala/Essoldo, Pendleton, Salford

Located in the Pendleton district of Salford, Lancashire, behind St. Thomas Church at the corner of Ford Lane & Greenwood Street. The Scala Cinema was opened on 20th February 1913 with “Nemesis” and “"Bob’s Deception”. Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels.

In 1924 it was taken over by the J.F. Emery Circuit. In late-1928 additions to expand the size of the cinema were designed to the plans of architectural firm Charles Swain & Partners. The Scala Cinema was taken over by the Newcastle based Essoldo circuit in September 1948, and it was re-named Essoldo. The Essoldo was closed on 12th May 1968 with Charlton Heston in “Will Penny”.

It became an Essoldo Bingo Club, which closed in the mid-1970’s. The building was then demolished, and the site has remained vacant.
