County Cinema

Located in Farnham, Surrey, to the south of London. The Electric Theatre was opened on 8th March 1913 with 618 seats. It was designed by architect Harold Falkner. In 1917 it was re-named Palace Cinema.

In 1930, it was equipped with a Western Electric sound system. The Palace Cinema was closed on 25th March 1933, as it had been replaced by the County Cinemas chain new Regal Cinema, which had opened along East Street.

The Palace Cinema remained closed until 1936, when cinema architect Harold S. Scott was employed by the County Cinemas chain to rebuild the cinema. It re-opened on 19th December 1936 as the County Cinema with Jack Buchanan in “This’ll Make You Laugh”.

In 1939, the County Cinemas chain were taken over by the Oscar Deutsch chain of Odeon Theatres Ltd. The County Cinema was never equipped with CinemScope, and was closed on 27th October 1956 with Greta Garbo in “Camille. It was demolished and the site became a car park. A building named Cambridge House has been built on the site.

The Electric Theatre was designed by Harold Falkner and built by Mardon & Mills according to local Records in Farnham
