Palace Theatre

Located on the corner of Fore Street and Crockwell Street, in Bodmin, Cornwall. The Picture Theatre was opened in 1911 with 300 seats. In the early-1920’s it was re-named Turrett Kinema, and in April 1930 it was equipped with an Edibell sound system. Soon after, it was taken over by a new operator and re-named Palace Theatre, and had a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system installed. Seating was now provided for 400.

Part-time bingo was introduced on Sunday’s & Wednesday’s in the 1960’s. The Palace Theatre was closed in the early-1980’s. It was taken over by an estate agents, and the front of the building was demolished in January 1988, it was occupied by Stratton Creber estate agents. By July 2015 they had moved out of the building and it is now a charity shop for Cornwall Hospice Care.

I called into the Cornwall Hospice Care shop this afternoon to donate some ‘bits and bobs’ – it used to be an Estate Agents. The rear shop showroom occupies the former cinema auditorium. Looking up, the original decorative plasterwork is in place around the beautiful former round windows – externally these windows are visible, but permanently boarded/bricked up. A fascinating visual treat and worth viewing.

I remember this cinema well. I saw Abba the movie there in some time like 1978. Specifically, I remember the Cinema owner was very eccentric – he always appeared at the start of each show to warn patrons NOT to ruin his cinema by eating sweets and smoking etc. He seemed really to dislike children especially – and he was always listened to in stony silence. Even as a child I thought it was a bit much to be lectured like this! Really sad it closed down. Now so little remains. In fact there are so few old fashioned cinemas in the UK. All horrible multiplexes. Gone, gone, gone.
