The La Scala Cinema was opened on 22nd January 1916 with “Trilby”. It was taken over by Thomas Ormiston of Motherwell in 1920, and became one of the cinemas in his small circuit.

The Ormiston circuit was taken over by Denman Picture Houses, a subsidiary of Gaumont British Theatres in March 1928, and it was soon operated by Gaumont British Theatre/Provincial Cinematograph Theatres(PCT). By 1935, they proposed plans to build a new cinema on the site, and the La Scala Cinema was closed on 2nd July 1938, and it was demolished.

A new 1,000-seat Gaumont was built on the site, which in later years became the Odeon, Classic and finally De-Luxe Cinema.
