Theatre Royal

Located in Barnstaple, Devon. The Theatre Royal was built in 1843. It was redesigned in 1895 to the plans of an architect named Mr. Petter. It was screening films as part of the programme from the late-1890’s

In the early-1920’s it was taken over by the Albany Ward/Provincial Cinematograph Theatres(PCT) chain, and in February 1929, they were taken over by the Gaumont British Theatres chain.

The Theatre Royal was closed in February 1930, and was demolished to build a new Gaumont Palace on the site, which opened on 3rd August 1931. That still operates in 2013 as the Central Cinema, and has its own page on Cinema Treasures.
