The last decade of the Regent began after Shipman & King screened their final film “Hello Dolly” in February 1971 and a week later the cinema passed into the hands of EMI. Early 1976 saw Miles Byrne lease the the Regent from EMI, however, this tenure was to be short lived because of local opposition to the kind of films being screened and Byrne’s moved out at the end of July 1976. In early 1977 Domans Park Productions leased the cinema from EMI and spent £40,000 on alterations trying to make the Regent more viable. The stalls area became Bingo with 500 seats, while the circle a cinema with 240 seats. The aptly named film “Time Bandits” finally closed the Regent on 12th September 1981. A few weeks before demolition commenced I saved a few interior items that 46 years previously had been designed by Eugene Mollo.
