Sylvan

A conversion of a former bank building, the Sylvan Theatre was open in Fall of 1933 and was located on W. Court Street off N. Main Street. The theatre could seat 300 patrons. In its later years it was operated by Stewart and Everett. The Sylvan Theatre closed in the mid to late-1960’s.

It was open until at least the late sixties. My parents lived in Rutherfordton for a short time. During that time I visited them while on leave and saw the John Wayne movie “The Green Berets”. That makes it no earlier than July 1968.

Pre-1935 this building was the home of the Levi Bank in Rutherfordton, NC.

The “Theater Changes Reported By the Film Boards of Trade” section of the October 28, 1933 issue of Film Daily listed the Sylvan Theatre at Rutherfordton as a new theater.
