The Starlite Drive-In opened March 18, 1949 with Tex Ritter in “Rolling Home to Texas” and Robert Mitchum in “Betrayed”. The car capacity was listed at 400 cars. It was initially operated by Anderson Theatres and finally by Malco Theatres. At one time Malco Theatres dominated the market in Owensboro. The drive-in closed in 1988 when the screen was burned by vandals.

A more accurate address (at least according to Google) is 2960 W. Parrish Ave, Owensboro, KY. The drive-in sat on the south side of the road.

Today, the property holds Kroger’s grocery store. However, you can still make out the faint edges and ramps of the drive-in both to the south and east sides of the store. http://tinyurl.com/jtfy4oy

Were the vandals who set the screen on fire arrested by the police?
