Empire Cinema

Located in Hucknall a district to the north of Nottingham. Originally built in 1910 as the Byron Skating Rink, it opened as the New Theatre in January 1911. Presenting cine-variety, the proscenium was 30 feet wide, and the stage 40 feet deep. There were four dressing rooms. It was soon re-named Empire Cinema.

In 1930 it was equipped with a Marshall sound system, but was closed as a cinema in late-1936. It re-opened on 8th March 1937 as a music hall. Reverting back to cinema use in 1940, the Empire Cinema was closed around 1953/1954.

The building went to other uses, and by 1990, it was in use as a snooker club, which remains open in 2013.
