Gaiety Cinema

The Gaiety Cinema opened as a cine-variety theatre on 14th November 1916, with the film “The Eternal Grind”, starring Mary Pickford. It had a 24 feet wide proscenium. It has been said that, in later years, patrons from rival factions on the nearby Falls and Shankill Roads shared the week out between them, to avoid the inevitable fighting if they arrived at the same time!

The Gaiety Cinema closed in 1956 and, after much reconstruction, reopened as a Woolworths store. In November 1998, when I visited, it was the Star Bingo Club operated by Planet Bingo Group. It was still open in 2019, but had closed by 2023 when it was boarded up.
