Savoy 2 Cinema

In Newry, County Down, the Savoy Cinema is listed in the 1934 Kine Year Book as being operated by Derek Finney and J. U. Finney. It had 750 seats. By the 1953 edition the operator was shown as The Savoy (Newry) Ltd. and the seating capacity had risen slightly (or more accurately!)to 755. Films were booked by Irish Cinemas Ltd. in Belfast.

By 1985 the British Film Institute Handbook was listing the cinema as the Savoy 2, with two screens, seating 197 and 148. By the 1988-89 edition the second screen had reduced to 58 seats. It is not known when the Savoy 2 Cinema closed, but it was open during my visit in November 1998. Quite possibly it closed around the time the 9-screen Omniplex opened, in June 1999.

Site is now Bellini’s Bar and Restaurant. Worth mentioning that the cinema was bombed in 1953 having shown a film about the Coronation.
