It was built for Sol Sheckman’s Newcastle upon Tyne based Essoldo circuit, and opened on 5th September 1955. Like its predecessor, it had a ballroom attached.

The Roxy Cinema was closed on 15th November 1964, and was converted into an Essoldo Bingo Club, which continues today as a Mecca Bingo Club.
