The Capitol Theatre was built circa 1931 in Wynberg, a suburb of Cape Town by Kinemas Ltd. Its design architects were Wallgate & Elsworth (with Kallenbach, Kennedy & Furner). The seating in this cinema was accommodated in stalls and circle sections. This cinema originally operated in direct competition to the African Theatre’s Regal Cinema, situated on Main Road, Wynberg.

The Capitol Theatre closed in 1984, the premises was renovated to house “The Old Standard Pub” when that establishment vacated its premises in Wolfe Street, in favour of the Wynberg club. Today the building still stands and now houses a small shopping mall and offices.
