Palace Theatre

Originally opened as the County Hall, it was screening films in 1908. It was re-named Palace Theatre in 1910 when it was taken over by the Albany Ward Circuit, and began life as full time cinema. Albany Ward Circuit were taken over by the Provincial Cinematograph Theatres(PCT) chain, and the Palace Theatre went over to mainly live theatre uses, with occasional films. In February 1929 they were taken over by the Gaumont British Theatres chain.

G.B. closed the Palace Theatre on 7th May 1931. The building stood empty and unused for several years until 1937 when it was converted into the Palace Garage. It was later demolished and offices and three shops were built on the site.
