Morgan Opera House

The building was constructed in 1890 by J. C. Morgan for his dry goods store. The building had a theatre on its second floor from 1891, accessed only by a narrow stairway. On August 26, 1911, a mistaken cry of “Fire” (perhaps from the projection booth) resulted in the deaths of 26 people, one of the deadliest theatre panics in history. The theatre then closed, though there had been no fire. The building still stands.
