Thatched Cinema

The Thatched Assembly Rooms Cinema was opened in the ballroom of the Tudor style building on 11th November 1915 with “The Old Curiosity Shop”. Architect J. Owen Bond was the manager & licensee of the cinema.

The Thatched Cinema was closed on 12th April 1930 with Brigitte Helm in “Society Scandals” (aka Scandal in Baden-Baden) a German silent film, plus on stage a variety show named “Oh!”. The cinema was never equipped for sound. It reverted back to being a ballroom.

Later it was converted into retail use for Bond’s store. It was destroyed by German bombs in air raids on the city on April 27 & 29 1942.

(As a side note; in 1932 architect J. Owen Bond designed the Carlton (later Gaumont) Cinema across the road opposite the Thatched Cinema.)
