Savoy Cinema

Located in the Ancoats district to the northeast of inner city Manchester, on Butler Street near the junction of Oldham Road. The Electric Theatre was opened in 1912. In 1930 it was expanded to the plans of Manchester based Architectural firm Matley, Brotherton & Mills and was renamed Butler Electric Theatre. It was equipped with a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system in 1931. In December 1940 it was badly damaged by German bombs and was closed until the damage could be repaired.

By 1944 the Butler Electric Theatre had been taken over by the Marks Circuit Cinemas. In March 1950 it was re-named Savoy Cinema.

The Savoy Cinema was closed in April 1956. It was still standing unused in 1962, but has since been demolished in a widespread rebuild of the area.
