People's Electric Theatre

In Hertford, Hertfordshire, at the corner of Maidenhead Street and Bull Plain, the People’s Electric Theatre was a conversion of part of the premises of Messrs J. J. Rayment and Son. It opened on Monday 14th November 1910. The proprietor was C. E. Sheppard while E. S. Peeke was the “operator” (projectionist) and electrician.

In a newspaper announcement in October 1913 Mr Sheppard denied rumours of imminent closure, stating that he had the hall on a lease for a number of years and the cinema would continue as usual.

However, it closed around September 1914, when Mr Sheppard acquired the rival Premier Cinema.

The building was for many years a branch of Boots the chemists, but by 1985 it was occupied by F. Hinds, jewellers, which continues to this day (2018).
