Palace Cinema

In Hayle, Cornwall, the Copperhouse Cinema opened in the early-1920’s. It had 240 seats and was owned by H. R. Hill and R. C. Hill and presented one show nightly, with a matinee on Saturdays. By the mid-1920’s it had been acquired by Wilkinson Jones and was being run from the Gaiety Cinema, Newlyn.

Another change of hands, in 1928 to H. L. Pool, brought about a change of name, to the Palace Picture House. Further changes of ownership through the 1930’s eventually saw it pass into the hands of Cornwall Cinemas (Newquay) Ltd, then, around 1950, to Constellation Cinemas, and, only a few years later, to Taylor Enterprises. The 1953 Kine Year Book lists it as just the Palace Cinema.

By 1968, the seating had been reduced to 198 following refurbishment. It then struggled on through the 1970’s and into the 1980’s, eventually closing around 1983. It was certainly derelict in 1989, and still boarded up in 1991. In 1995 it was thought the council might purchase the building. Whether it did or not, by the time of my visit, in September 1999, the building had been brought back to life, albeit as a cafe and pizza parlour.
