Rex Cinema

Centraal Cinema opened it’s doors in 1919. After the renovation in 1934 it was renamed to Savoy Cinema. Cineac was the owner and part of the greater Cineac group. A new wooden floor was built above the existing stone floor. The Chinese style wall decorations were renewed. In 1937 the last name to change to Rex Cinema took place together with the premiere of “Shanghai Express” with Marlene Dietrich in the lead role. In 1950 a renovation changed the floor into grey carpet and some wall decorations into teak wood. The premiere of Hitchcock’s “Rope” took place.

In 1973 a small fire cause some damage, but in 1977 a large one forced the cinema to close it’s doors. Nowadays (2015) it’s a large bookstore named ‘Paagman’.
