Gaiety Cinema

In the Devon town of Appledore, the Gaiety Cinema was a conversion of a building that was constructed in 1893, possibly as a Methodist chapel. The Gaiety Cinema opened sometime between 1919 and 1923. It had a very plain façade. Variety acts took advantage of the 9ft deep stage and the two dressing rooms.

By the time of the 1931 and 1940 Kinematograph Year Books, the proprietor was G. Taylor. The 1953 edition lists T. G. Wylde as the owner.

It is thought the Gaiety Cinema closed later in the 1950’s.

The building, basically unaltered since its days as a cinema, was being used as private housing in 2000. It was unclear whether this was still the case when I visited, in July 2003. However, since then, it has been extensively remodelled as housing.
