Raith Cinema

In Kirkcaldy, in the county of Fife, on the northern shore of the Firth of Forth, the Raith Cinema opened on 5th December 1938 with Hazel Ascot in “Stepping Toes”. It was equipped with a RCA sound system.

The 1940 and 1953 Kinematograph Year Books listed the owner as Raith Cinemas Ltd. of Edinburgh. The proscenium was 38ft wide, the stage was 7ft 6ins deep and there were two dressing rooms.

The Raith Cinema had closed by 1963 and was converted into the Raith Ballroom. In 1972 when a fire destroyed the bingo club in the former Carlton Cinema and it was transferred here.

Meanwhile, the Kirkcaldy Rhema Church, which has its origins in South Africa and places a strong emphasis on the family, had been founded in 1982. The church initially met in the town’s Arcade Hall, before taking over the Raith Cinema building in 1992.

It is now known as the Christian Centre Ministries.
