Ideal Theatre

Located in Wednsfield to the northeast of Wolverhampton. Originally built in 1852 as a Methodist chapel, it was converted into the Electric Theatre in November 1912. In August 1914 plans by architect H. Marcus Brown of Wolverhampton were approved to build a gallery in the building.

In 1922 alterations were carried out to the plans of architectural firm Boswell & Tomkins, and it was around this time that it was re-named Ideal Cinema.

The interior was redesigned in an Art Deco style in the late-1930’s and was equipped with a Gyrotone sound system. The Ideal Theatre was closed in Autumn 1957. It was refurbished in 1959 with a view to re-opening as a cinema, but vandals broke in and did so much damage, it was unviable and it was never used as a cinema again. In early-1962 it was converted into a dance hall which operated for a while. After it closed it became a carpet store but was destroyed in a fire around 1982, and has since been rebuilt.
