Peacehaven Cinema

Located in Peacehaven, to the east of Brighton. The purpose built Pavilion Cinema opened in February 1923. It was situated by the junction of Sutton Avenue and the South Coast Road (A259).

The screen proscenium was 20ft wide and it had a stage that was 15 feet deep, behind which there were two dressing rooms. For the first eleven years it had shows and concerts in addition to films.

The proprietor was Mr P.H. Braithwaite and the Pavilion Cinema was adapted for sound in 1931.

In 1934 it was renamed the Peacehaven Cinema and was now used solely for film.

In February 1940, the Peacehaven Cinema was gutted by fire. The cause being put down to a smouldering cigarette, which was quite likeky as all that remained of the building was the fireproof projection box and the stilts upon which it stood.

Older Peacehaven residents recall that the screen used to flap during high winds.

It was never rebuilt and Peacehaven was never to have another full time cinema. The site is now an area of grass at the side of a roundabout.
