Starlight Drive-In

Located in Watson to the north of Canberra. The Starlight Drive-In opened on 2nd January 1957 with a capacity for 48 cars. It was later twinned and the capacities were 353 & 594 cars. It was closed in 1993. The site has been cleared(date unknown), except for the sign which stood until 2012 when damaged in a storm, and was taken away to be fixed and replaced in the same place. The rest of the site is now Starlight Apartments.

The entrance(and exit?) Road for the Starlight Apartments nay be tne original entrance(and/or exit road of the Starlight Drive-in?

Opened on 2/1/1957 with 480 cars. A second screen was added in November 1982. Screen 1 then had 353 cars, and screen 2 had 594 cars.

Exhibitor was George Kimlin - Canberra Enterprises P/L / Greater Union(1957 to 1987), C. Ryman(1988 to 1993). Also known as Canberra Starlight Twin Drive-in.

The sign was restored without it’s 2 title boxes(marquee) below the sign. The sign has been heritage listed.

This drive-in’s marquee sign was the first neon sign in Canberra.
