Empire 6 Cinemas Bedford

Opened on June 1, 1989 with 4 auditoriums, this theatre was located in the town of Bedford (now a suburb of Halifax), and was Empire’s first multiplex theatre. The opening films were “No Holds Barred”, “Scandal”, “Renegades”, and “Criminal Law”.

It was later expanded to 6 auditoriums, with seating capacities of 332, 332, 270, 282, 193, and 193. (source: Mike Rivest’s guide)

It closed on May 7, 2007, with no replacement built: patrons were directed to go to Empire’s locations in Lower Sackville and Bayers Lake (both now owned by Cineplex Entertainment). It was soon demolished, and a Lawtons Drugs store and strip mall now occupy the site.

I miss this place…it had great murals dedicated to different classic movies, and was kind of Empire’s palace (not on the outside) until Bayers Lake was built in 1997.
